A group of chickadees is known as a banditry. Perhaps because of their cunning personalities, boldness and little black caps. In any case, it's a good metaphor for the spirit of this endeavor. While incubating this project, I began to find feathers. They started to appear as totems, and I looked at them as encouragement. Eagles were often soaring above as the project progressed.
In thinking of a press name, I wanted to incorporate the birds who’ve been a tremendous support in this endeavor and had entered other realms of my sub-conscious.
Chickadees are recognized as a steadfast northern bird. Hardy, they are one of the few species who sticks around all winter. Quite intelligent little birds, they have a sophisticated language that is layered with nuance. They’re also notoriously bold, pecking at windows for attention & will band together to defend themselves against larger birds invading their territory. Perhaps this is why a group of them is known as a banditry. Their little black-caps also look like bandit masks.
In historical context, bandits are social rebels --- Robin-hood-esque characters doing what they need to survive, stick up for themselves, their community & their values. Chickadees, much the same. And Banditry Press, well yes indeed.
