John Gordon was a tramp printer (a term used to identify traveling printers in the early 20th century) who settled on Vinalhaven in the 1930’s. He was also the junk-man and built his own press from scrap metal and wood. Using his jack knife to carve images in wood, he made humorous and satirical prints and books. He used scavenged wallpaper from old houses around the island as covers for his publications. He was a real character and has been a great beacon for this project and this life. 'To Hell with Gloom' was his motto, and I do my best carry it on.
There is a great history and collection of John Gordon at the Vinalhaven Historical Society and his original books can be viewed at the Maine State Library special collections.
